The Royal Parade and Redoubt
Bowling Club is a flat green outdoor bowling club being the result of a
merger in 2001 of the 'Royal Parade Ladies Bowling Club' and the men's
'Eastbourne Redoubt Bowling Club'.
Both clubs have a very long and proud
tradition; the men's club being founded in 1909 and the ladies club being
founded in 1932. The club is affiliated to the E.B.A., E.W.B.A., Sussex County
Bowling Association. and the Sussex County Women's Bowling
Association.
It is noteworthy that Mrs Clara Johns, a pioneer of women's
bowls, the Founder President of the English Women's Bowling Association in
1931, the EWIBA and the SCWBA was one of the founder members of our Royal
Parade Ladies Club. Each year ladies compete in an Inter-County competition
playing for the honour of winning the Johns Trophy.
The bowls club is situated at the
bowling greens at Princes Park, Eastbourne, the men having moved from the
Redoubt greens in 1936 and the ladies in 1947. They share the accommodation
with two other bowling clubs which are under the umbrella of the Princes Park
Bowls Association.
The Club badge is a result of the
amalgamation of the ladies and men's clubs in 2001. The swan originally being
that of the Royal Parade Ladies signifying their home at Princes Park and the
cannon being that of the Redoubt Fortress where the greens were the men's home
before moving to Princes Park.
Outdoor
Facilities
The Bowling Greens at Princes Park
are unique in Eastbourne having 24 rinks on 4 greens. There is seating for
non-bowlers and spectators around all the greens.
The greens are
maintained to the highest standard and are open daily from the end of April
each year and close at the end of September.
Indoor Facilities
The clubhouse has sufficient
accommodation, refreshment facilities and both ladies and men's changing rooms
to welcome and entertain visiting teams.
Membership
The club has over 70 playing
members, some being County players. There are also Social members. We welcome
beginners as well as those experienced bowlers. We have many members able to
give tuition and coaching.
Our members regularly play together in mixed
matches, as well as Men's and Ladies matches. We hold a club afternoon each
week as well as club competitions and local league fixtures.
In
addition, we regularly host the Sussex County and Town Ladies competitions and
are involved in the Eastbourne Open competition.
